In December, my family had the opportunity to attend Dragonsteel Nexus. For those unfamiliar with Dragonsteel Nexus, it is a conference centered around the books and worlds of Brandon Sanderson. I reviewed some of his books here.
It’s a four day event. We were only able to attend on the last day as we have a toddler and four days is a lot for a little one. It was entertaining enough that if we had been able to go all four days, we would have had plenty to do and see!
Smaller Crowds
We’ve gone to Fanx in the past and Dragonsteel Nexus had a similar vibe, but better. There was a cap on attendance, so it wasn’t as crowded. There was still plenty of people to mingle with and chat about your favorite books with.
Vendor Floor
The vendor floor had some awesome booths. Sometimes at cons, there tends to be several booth selling the exact same items, but that wasn’t the case here. It had a nice variety. We bought our toddler his first light saber from Nat20 Sabers.
Entry to the con allowed you to enter a raffle and I won a book.
Panels
The panels were great. We attended several great panels on writing and one about the art work in Brandon Sanderson’s books. Besides panels, there was a variety of things to do. They had a game room to play your favorite games. They had arts and crafts rooms. Plus, they had sword battle demonstrations to watch. If my son was a bit older, I would have taken him to the story time.
General Thoughts
I loved that my son was able to walk around on the vendor floor. He’s an independent toddler that doesn’t like to always be carried. He held our hands and walked like one of the grown ups.
The crowds were only questionable once we bought our son a light saber, but we are happy to say that he didn’t hit a single person with it while carrying it around.
The workers at Dragonsteel Nexus were very friendly and helpful.
Five stars. I hope to attend Dragonsteel Nexus again!
